Blue Stahli — "Obsidian"
A music video for rocktronic powerhouse Blue Stahli co-directed by Sydney Mills & Justin McGrath
Inspired by Blue Stahli’s Dead Channel trilogy of albums, all named after geological minerals, Mills and McGrath imagine the inner alien landscape of an obsidian meteor fallen to earth. Viewers are taken on a journey into the rock itself as it chaotically explodes, implodes and reforms into dark spherical perfection in a cataclysm of liquified geodes and lasers.
Working in McGrath’s garage, “Obsidian” was prepped, shot and cut in three weeks. Mills crafted the props and physical effects herself by hand while McGrath created all visual effects with nothing but a CRT and a vintage analog video effects controller. This commitment to practical filmmaking served their goal to infuse their collaborative work with tangible sci-fi horror chaos. Mills was also the cinematographer and colorist for this project.
