GLOVE FLAVORED (2023)
In GLOVE FLAVORED, Mills ruminates on the conflicting emotions of the sublime and the grotesque in relation to moments of medical intervention. Latex gloves symbolizing both protection and detachment, and the unidentified viscera, representing both the fragility and resilience of the human body, create a visual tension that reflects on the complexities of our relationship to medical spaces and procedures.
Hospitals, with their sterile atmosphere and often impersonal décor, are meant to provide a sense of safety and cleanliness. They can evoke a sense of hope and grandeur, due to their association with life-saving technology and the expertise of the learned medical professionals who work within them. Yet, these spaces can also remind us of our mortality. They elicit feelings of discomfort, fear, and vulnerability, as both patients and visitors are confronted with their own bodily limitations. Medical-grade tools and disposable antimicrobial personal protective gear remind us of our dependence on invasive medical intervention for survival.
GLOVE FLAVORED was featured on Galeria Vida in Spring 2023 and has been screened at both Unthinkable Film Festival 2023 in Kingston upon Hull, England and Chroma Art Film Festival 2023 in Miami, FL.
